The ABC Loft Apartments on Adderley Street in Cape Town CBD involves the conversion of an existing commercial building to residential loft apartments. Aertec AAC was specified for the lightweight partitioning system, enabling the residential conversion without the need for structural reinforcement of the existing floor slabs.
Commercial floor slabs in Cape Town CBD buildings are typically designed for office loading, which is higher per unit area than residential loading. However, the concentrated load of conventional masonry partition walls can exceed the slab's capacity, requiring costly structural reinforcement. Aertec AAC's lightweight characteristic eliminates this issue, enabling residential partition walls to be installed on commercial-grade slabs without structural intervention.
The ABC Loft project was Phase 1 of the conversion, followed by Phase 2 in 2022, with both phases specified with Aertec AAC.
