House Newlands, Sans Souci Road

Nieuw Architects have taken design and functionality to a new level with this high-end property. The innovative design utilizes a mix of traditional & contemporary materials applied modularly to minimize wastage, accelerate construction, save weight and costs. The result is a modular building without the restricted traditional appearance of modular architecture which was made possible by the use of Aertec AAC blocks.

Lead architect Jankel Nieuwoudt, along with Rikus de Kock have been at the forefront of AAC design and have mastered this bespoke AAC design by creating artwork out of masonry materials. The external walls consist of two 100mm thick AAC skins with a cavity between. This however is not a typically conventional external skin as the AAC blocks have been cut along their length to produce a more flattened look once laid together in a very particular pattern. This design has given birth to an architectural feature wall which encapsulates the entire structure. The main feature that Jankel was looking for was an embossed unique look, whereby the trueness and crispness of the AAC material can represent itself.

In addition to the aesthetics of the design, Nieuw Architects along with the client were looking for a product that could maximize the occupational comfort and perform well within the given parameters of the site location. The outstanding thermal properties as well as the green status of Aertec AAC are further key reasons for the decision to specify AAC on this project. The Aertec EG2/400 Precision Blocks are 7.5 and 12.5 times more thermally insulated than that of a clay brick and concrete brick respectively. In addition, the lightweight characteristics of the Aertec EG2/400 Precision Block being 1/5th of the weight of conventional masonry contributed substantially to the success of the design.
